Post if you could invite Sondheim to dinner...
so my English assignment was to pick 5 people and for each tell in about 100 words why you would invite them. Unfortunately, I left the assignment to the last minute and so it isn't really up to my usual standards.
I was wondering how everyone one here would answer the question?
Oh, and here is what I wrote:

" Next, I would issue an invitation to Stephen Sondheim. Considered by me, and many others to be one of the best musical theatre composers of all time, he wrote the single hardest role in musical theatre; Baker’s Wife. I want to know everything, where his ideas come from, how he writes things, what is his favorite thing about music and theatre. My favorite Broadway shows are Into the Woods and Company; I want to know what his favorite show is. In my eyes Sondheim is a genius and I’d enjoy nothing better than to spend an hour or two discussing music with him. "

His favourite show? Sondheim has said many times his favourite musical ever is Porgy & Bess. He considers it to be score-wise in a different class from everything else.

The question is, if Sondheim came to dinner, what would you cook him?

His favorite single line from any musical is "Ever since that time, when the world was an onion..." by E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, in "The Eagle and Me", from Bloomer Girl (1944).

You are mistaken my friend. Carousel is a favorite of his, but not South Pacific. He's openly criticized South Pacific for being "the happiest war I've ever seen."
If I had Sondheim over for dinner, I'd probably discuss R&H a little, some of his favorite shows from the past, the joys and troubles of writing for the theatre, the state of the theatre...and of course his own work, memories of the original Hal Prince productions, etc.
But yeah, a good question is what would we eat?

I'm not sure that there's any standard by which the Baker's Wife could be considered the most difficult musical theatre role.

This might be because Porgy and Bess is an opera, not a musical.
