What is your opinion of this song from Follies? I think it is a masterpeice of Sondheim's ability to write lyrics. Who is your favorite lady to perform this song? For me, it is a tie between Ann Miller and Carol Burnett!

no one can ever top the great Yvonne DeCarlo with the song. it was written for her. look at the lyric "first your another slow eyed vmap, then someones mother..then your camep". she was the only actress to perform the role that actually played all 3.

and she performs the song with humor, aching realisim and guts.

the only other person to come close to her definitive rendition is Ann Miller.

Yvonne De Carlo is wonderful, of course!!! What do you think of the lesser known Carlottas like Nancy Walker and Delores Grey? I still think the three definitives are De Carlo, Burnett and Miller!

Walker is decent. Delores Grey isnt beliveable because she was still strikingly attractive when she playedt he role. and she doesnt have the zest of DeCarlo and Miller.

Burnett hams it up too much. although she has a few great moments.
Polly Bergen is touching.

I've heard the song performed so many times, but I agree, no one can sing it like Yvonne DeCarlo did. And yes, the lyrics fit the various phases of her career - right up to (camp) Lily Munster. I think the cast album was recorded late in the run - it doesn't do justice to the performance I saw.

The song is super. It's brilliantly structured, not only as a piece that reflects character but in the way it captures 20th Century American history in just a few minutes. There's an great unpacking of the references in the song, by June Abernathy, available here. It's fun to read every now and again.

I'll agree with most people here in regard to performances of the song. Yvonne de Carlo is electrifying. There's a video of her doing the song on the David Frost show, which is super despite one of her characteristic lyric flubs.

Perfect.

I love the ending climax, too.
