OSCAH.

EXACTLY!
Alfred Uhry's "Parade' is one of the great musical dramas of the 20th century..JRB's score is so complex, moving, tuneful and brillant. its the only time all the pieces were in place for a show he did the score for. He heed's to collaborate with Uhry again.

...and boring and tedious and depressing and ballad-heavy and whiny.

How is Parade boring and tedious? The songs blast tons of energy in the piece - This Is Not Over Yet, That's What He Said, Hammer of Justice, etc.

Add to that "Pretty Music" and "The Picture Show" and that's only five 'fun' songs in a show with over thirty songs. It's not hard (especially with this show) to pick out the few up-tempo, pleasant-to-listen-to songs.

It's a tragedy. You can't complain about a tragedy being downbeat or depressing.

I must agree with this. You may not like the fact that the show is sad, but that is unrelated to the piece's quality.

You're right, that is something I don't like about the show. The show bafflingly has its fans, and that's great. But don't expect someone who doesn't enjoy it to sing its praises.

dont tell me you are one of those people who only likes light and fluffy?

i love pieces that make you feel, think, cry, get angry, laugh and contemplate. thats the point of theatre.

I don't like 'only' light and fluffy, but I prefer it. There are plenty of tragic shows that I like.

100% untrue. Most of the songs are quite lively and varied...... the only real downers are "All the Wasted Time", "It Don't Make Sense", "You Don't Know This Man", the mother's song and Leo's statement in the courtroom. Parade is far from being a somber history lesson. Yes, the ending is an unhappy one but the same can be said for many wonderful musicals and plays.

That said, I saw a production of 13 and rather liked it. I found it surprisingly honest and funny, totally reminded me of myself at that age. It's a wonderful showcase piece for talented young performers, and doesn't sound at all like a bad idea for a film. I never want to see the really great musicals put on the screen because inevitably it will be a dull, unimaginative, award-pandering piece of turd.
