I have no idea where it's from, but it's absolutely hysterical. Holy crap.

It does, however, require a little bit of explanation:

"Die Schatten werden länger" is one of the more well-known songs from the German musical Elisabeth, essentially a scene where Death seduces the title character's son. Both Uwe Kröger (Berlin Javert) and Martin Pasching (Berlin Enjolras) have played Death at some point. So I gather that the cast was having a little joke, but damn, now I really wish I knew where it's from.

(Just be glad(?) it was Uwe and not Mate Kameras, or there would have been a lot more groping.)

You know, actually... I think it is quite beautiful. It would be awesome if Enjolras had a duet with Death in Les Mis... It would take my breathe away.

And how I wish that I had gone to see 'Elisabeth'......

I agree, that would be beyond cool.

BTW, I found the translation to the song.

Death:
Now it is the right location,
for a private conversation.
You know me, yes you know me.
Since your childhood we've been friends
and our friendship hasn't ended,
I promised not to leave you.

Rudolf:
I call you in desperation,
everytime this nightmare hunts me.

Death:
You need me, here I am.

Rudolf:
Have the gods run out of kindness?
Our ship has lost direction.
Is the shipman struck with blindness?
He does not even hear me.

Death:
On the black sky´s golden letters,
you can see them spell disaster.

Rudolf:
It´s driving me insane.

Death:
It´s all up to you,
so do what you have to do.
There you can take it,
to be a rebel.

Rudolf:
Rebel?

Death:
It is time that we talk to each other
It's time to break the silence
you know me, yes, you know me
Do you still remember?
you were a young boy when I promised you
that I will always be near you

Rudolf:
Oh, I have not forgotten you, my friend
I call for you when my fears overcome me.
Death:
I'll come when you need me.

Both:
The shadows grow longer
but everybody has a blind eye for it,
as long as the Pied Piper plays,
everybody is dancing around the Golden calf,
the shadows grow longer.
It's always 5 minutes before midnight.
Time is almost over.
Time to see the rift of the old world,
I wish to turn the steering wheel,
But I have to stand by, my hands are tied.
Nothing is worse as seing how the evil develops
and watching it in utter powerlessness,
it makes me sick.

The shadows grow longer
and the songs become heavy and cold
the vicious circle becomes tighter
But one only believes what one likes to believe
the shadows grow longer--
it is 5 to midnight
What keeps your back?
This is the moment!
Seize the power, it's just self defense. Nothing else.

The shadows grow longer--
what will be will be
We have to withstand evil
The shadows grow longer--
Emperor Rudolph will be with the new time.

That musical looks so good! Does anybody have any information on it? I just read a synopsis and I'm desperately trying to find the 1995 Vienna Cast Recording - anybody have any ideas where I could find it? Amazon only had the original cast and ebay didn't have anything.

Not quite. What you found seems to be fragments of a lyrical translation--I don't know what else to call it, a singable translation that preserves rhyme and meter but has a different literal meaning--with a complete but slightly inaccurate literal translation at the end.

Here's the full "singable" version. (I put "singable" in quotes because it's rather painfully bad.)

Quote:
Now this is the right occasion
For a private conversation.
You know me. Yes, you know me.
Since your childhood, we're befriended,
And our friendship hasn't ended.
I promised not to leave you.

I call you in desperation
Every time this nightmare haunts me,
When it feels like suffocation.

You need me, here I am!

The shades of night are growing.
The future has been bought and sold.
The doomsday horns are blowing
While they're dancing round a cup of gold.
The shades of night are growing.
It is five to twelve, our time is getting old.

Have the gods ran out of kindness?
Our ship has lost direction.
Is the helmsman struck with blindness?
He does not even hear me.

On the black sky, scarlet letters
You can read; they spell disaster.
Put your horse to waiting fetters.

It's driving me insane!

The shades of night are growing,
As man becomes a beast of prey.
We don't know where we're going,
But we're going faster every day.
The shades of night are growing;
It is five to twelve, our chances melt away.

It's all up to you.
So do what you have to do.
Dare take heart, to be a rebel!

Rebel?

The shades of night are growing;
One must try at last to turn the tide.
When good and bad are going,
Time is always on the devil's side.
The shades of night are growing.
So stand up and fight, and reach out for the light!

And a literal translation (with line breaks preserved):

DEATH
Time for us to speak at last
Time to break the silence
You know me, yes, you know me
Do you still know, you were a boy
When I promised you
That I would always be near you

RUDOLF
Oh, I have not forgotten you,
My friend, whom I call for
When my fears devour me

DEATH
I come because you need me

BOTH
The shadows are growing longer
And yet everyone stays blind and dumb
To the sound of the Pied Piper
They dance wildly around the golden calf
The shadows are growing longer
It's five to twelve
Time is almost up

RUDOLF
Time to see the rift in the world
If only I could turn the wheel
But I must stand by
My hands are bound

DEATH
Nothing is worse than to see
How the disaster plays out
And have to watch in helplessness

RUDOLF
It truly makes me sick

BOTH
The shadows are growing longer
And the songs are turning cold and shrill
The vicious circle draws in tighter
But one believes only what one wants to believe
The shadows are growing longer
It's five to twelve
Why is everyone holding still?

DEATH
What's holding you back?
This is the moment!
Reach for the power--
Do it out of self-defense!

RUDOLF
Self-defense?

BOTH
The shadows are growing longer
What must happen must happen
The vicious circle draws in closer
But we must stand against the catastrophe
The shadows are growing longer
Emperor Rudolf will meet his time

(Sort of. The last line is a total bitch to translate.)
