Post Stephen Sondheim blasts Lady Gaga's Oscars Performance
"On the Academy Awards [in which she performed a medley of Sound of Music songs] she was a travesty. It was ridiculous, as it would be from any singer who treats that music in semi-operatic style. She had no relationship to what she was singing. What people liked was her versatility.”

My thoughts:

I love Sondheim, he is my favourite Musical Theatre composer, but he can kiss my ass when it comes to this. He is coming across as a very bitter, old snob.

Gaga wasn't performing in The Sound of Music on Broadway, she was singing a tribute medley and an awards show.

He obviously has a prejudice against contemporary pop music but, to quote Gaga herself, 'Pop music will never be low-brow'.

How about praising the fact that she is bringing some theatricality and old-school musical theatre to a pop culture audience, instead of bashing her for not being up to your standard? She is head and shoulders above her contemporary pop artists.

Past Roles: Marius in Les Miserables, Doody in Grease
Dream Roles: Jack in Into the Woods, Anthony in Sweeney Todd

Plus the number of actresses that have performed his scores that were good singers can probably be counted on one hand.

Her performance in the Oscars was pretty damn amazing. It brought me back to when I was watching SoM. She looked beautiful too, her beauty is often unseen because of her flashy outfits, but that Oscars performance showed a different side of her.
