Post Help needed re Jekyll & Hyde / Company / Little Women
Can anyone give me a quick run down of one or all of these shows? I'm on a committee considering doing these shows and would like some advice which one to choose and why, thanks all :)

Jekyll & Hyde
Company
Little Women

You should be able to get a sypnosis on Wiki for these so I'll stick to pros and cons...

J&H

Pros:
Large company and good opportunity for ensemble work
No requirement for accents (set in London)
Well known - easy to market
Not much in the way of choreography (could be a con depending on your company)

Cons:
Vocally challenging
Large budget required for costume
You need a VERY good male lead
Possibly not suitable for children (reduced audience)
It's done quite a lot by amateur groups

Company

Pros:
Low cost set and costume wise (simple and modern setting)
Sondheim is generally revered in MT circles
Lots of good characters with equal stage time

Cons:
Not too well known in UK
Score is very complicated
Small cast (no ensemble)

Little Women

Pros:
Well known story
Lots of female characters (if you have an inbalance in that respect)
Not many companies have done this in the UK
Characters all have lots to do

Cons:
Small to non-existent ensemble
Period costume might stretch budget
Big age range between characters (could be a problem for a young company)

It really depends on the company. If you are after a large show, you'd probably want to go for J&H but it's a little overdone on the amateur circuit. The other two are smaller more intimate pieces and would depend on the make-up of your company. If you are female heavy, take a risk and go for Little Women (where abouts is it?! I'd audition!). Company is excellent though. It's a nice challenge for actors to do Sondheim I think.

This is just my opinion. Others will have a different take I imagine!

I hope this helps!

Hi Pitti-Sing [great name, I'm a G&S buff, lol]

Thanks for the reply. We are now concentrating on J&H.

We have a very large, strong chorus in our society so my concern is that [according to the famous Wiki sight; ;) ] there are only 3 chorus songs, with Facade also being repeated 3, maybe 4 times.

Do you know happen to know, first hand, how much ordinary chorus there is? [not counting large ensembles sung by named roles] We don't want the non-named members of the cast, especially ladies [as there are many men's roles] to be bored.

Thanks Aimee

Besides "Facade" and its three Reprises, the Ensemble only sings in "Murder Murder" and the Reprise of "Alive".

Thanks Apples.

That sounds pretty limited.

Would you agree or is it better than it seems when you're doing it?

When I did the show, it felt like the Ensemble was pretty active.

The chorus also appears in the Danver's party scene, The Red Rat scene (our prostitutes sang a verse of "Bring on the Men" with Lucy, but I don't know if that's the way it's written), and the ending wedding scene. They are onstage a lot.

Plus, "Murder, Murder" is like 10 minutes long.

That's what we did in my production, too.

Sorry I missed this to reply!

Well I wouldn't say the ensemble involvement is limited at all. They are very involved in the whole piece. As mentioned before, 'Murder Murder' is a beast of a song and they seemed to be on a lot in one form or another.

Also, it might be worth considering splitting your chorus into rich and poor, which is what we did and it worked really well.

The poor women were red rat girls (in Bring on the Men and Girls of the Night, which is a song we had specially licensed for our show - it has a Nellie solo in it and the rest of the girls along with Lucy) and the rich were dancers in the ball scenes with Danvers and Emma.

Our director also had this concept whereby there was a platform above the stage that the ensemble watched from in some scenes... so the rich chorus were onstage for some of the poor scenes in a disembodied fashion (in masks I think). Photo below gives an idea... that would be me kissing dirt after being slapped by Spider. Harsh!

I hope this helps in some way!
