I like that Pal Joey gave the world (especially Woody Allen) the song "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" so that it could be masterfully used in Hannah and Her Sisters.

Parade is one of my favorite musicals. It packs an emotional weight that not many shows do. JRB's music is stunning and the lyrics are so moving. I also love how one gets a real feel for the time and place in which the story is set through the music.

How about:
Once on this Island.

The Book. a rare example of a strong book and a mediocre score..I love "Exits" "Gospel According to king" and "Rookie in the Ring" but the rest of the score is merely adequate. what makes the show fun is the witty script.

a handful of songs, particularly Mr. Rich's 'Where Did It Go" and "Potemkin's "No My Problem". and the shows theme. unfortunately its very dated now and without major rewrites to the already brittle book, its unrevivable.

The unique Kander and Ebb spin on the score written old fashion on purpose.

I completely agree re: Saturday Night. That has some true gems--"So Many People", "Saturday Night", "What More Do I Need", etc. Great stuff.

West Side Story: Bernstein's score is about as great as they come for musical theatre. Honestly, it might just be the best score of the fifties, Sondheim's, erm, interesting lyrics out of the question. Even then, the creaky book and the flawed lyrics don't bring the score down at all. A staggering musical achievement from Mr. Bernstein.

The Impossible Dream just might be the best Athem song period.

Lerner's lyrics and fritz's music blend perfectly. lerner's lyrics for this show are highly under-rated. plus i really like the film screenplay, lerner imroved on the originals creaky script.
