Post What's up with the singing on the New Broadway Recording?
I have 4 recordings of West Side Story. The Original Broadway Cast, the Soundtrack, the 2007 Studio Recording and the 2009 New Broadway Cast. And as I am listening through the NBC I notice how "sung" it is. Am I the only one having some trouble with this? I mean, even the Studio recording has better acting! I especially react on America and Jet Song which seems to be all about show-casing once voices instead of acting the parts. Seriously, such numbers are not to be sung with a pretty voice, they are to be acted!

Anyone else who have noticed the pretty singing from the New Recording? And what are your thoughts? Is it better when it is sung pretty or when it is "acted"?

I found the whole recording uninspired, bland and not worth having.

While rehearsing the show, we listened mostly to the newer recording and I decided to buy it to get familiar with it (as we were using it for "Cool" and "Dance at the Gym"). I don't mind the pretty singing, so to speak, but sometimes it just doesn't gel..."Jet Song" doesn't have to sound perfect. In fact, I prefer it when it's not perfect because in my mind, the Jets aren't going to be amazing singers. It's more of a character song. Same with "Officer Krupke". I don't get "character song" when I hear it on the newer recording...especially with Baby John's part. Sure, it sounds nice, but that song is all about fun and character voice.

Also, Matt Cavanaugh (is that his name? I don't have the recording in front of me) while he can over sing "Maria", just doesn't really cut it on the acting. I know it's a recording so I can't be too picky...but I just don't get anything from him. Nice voice, decent range, but vanilla when it comes to Tony. (Then again, Tony is vanilla to begin with so it's kind of a challenge to make him interesting).

I really hope all of this makes sense...as I've stayed up most of the night and have gotten barely any sleep. :)

Tony = too much vibrato. Maria = nice voice. That's all.

I have not yet listened to the revival cast recording, but I am now intrigued.

This is basically how the entire world feels. Everything Matt Cavenaugh has been cast in is like... intentionally cheesy, like Superman and Joe Kennedy. Tony didn't fit this niche and it just... didn't work out.

I do actually quite like this recording. It's a shame the show is closing; I hope Josefina Scaglione lands another role in the United States. Does anyone know what's up with her since she left the show?

I have not heard this recording, but I feel in general that this is a show that needs to be acted rather than sung.
