It's wonderful!

What do ya'll think of the spanish?
I happen to love it.

I think it gives the show's characters a bit more depth.

But, it would have been nice to have translations for those not familiar for WSS in the program (ie. my sister).

It does, once it got to Broadway, but it's dark in the theatre, so it's not like you can follow along *as* it's being sung.

This problem was eliminated in D.C. where the lyrics and spoken lines were projected on screens. However, the screens were deemed distracting and eliminated during the D.C. run.

Does anyone have literal translations of the Spanish translations?

If you want me to I can translate them, but my Spanish isn't perfect, so there may be some flaws.

TONIGHT (Quintet)

I cut out some parts, especially during the quintet, but everything the Sharks sing is in there.

Yesterday they said no knives
But the Sharks with their eyeteeth
Are gonna make them run
Tonight.

We're gonna rock it tonight,
We're gonna jazz it up and have us a all
They're gonna get it tonight;
The more they turn it on, the harder they'll fall
We'll they began it!
And we're the ones to stop 'em once and for all,
Tonight!
SHARKS
There's will be an attack tonight
It will be accurately of total form. (does this even make sense?)
The quarrel begins tonight
We will be dominant in the final moment.
They are the guilty!
Here we will have our triumphal moment,

It will be the final chapter of a war without equal
There will be an attack tonight!

Post I listened to some of the songs,
and, with the exception of Dance at the Gym and America, I found the music to the new West Side Story soundtrack a bit too slow and sweet for my tastes. I have the CD soundtrack of the original late-1950's Broadway production of West Side Story, as well as the CD soundtrack of the film version of WSS, and the songs in both of those original soundtracks, to me, were much more exuberant, rapid and more upbeat. That's just my opinion. Nothing, imho, beats the originals.

As for the incorporation of Spanish into a musical such as WSS, I'm honestly not sure that it works that well here. Again, my opinion.

Some people claim the tempos are Bernstein's original. Not that this can change how you feel about it, but I mean they are intentionally slower. [Well I know everything would be intentional it's not like the conductor would be having a lazy day, lol, but I mean they are authentically intentionally slower] :P.

Yeah, thinking about it seeing it, it did seem a little slower. Oh btw, in the show, there is some dialogue in Spanish, too - wait I probably said that.
