Is this song incredibly cheesy (today) or is it just me? (Especially, well, mainly in context...)

Why? I think it's Bernstein at his coolest.

I like it.
It's one of the only song/dance numbers in WSS that don't make me want to gouge my eyes and ears out.

As you can see, I'm not a big fan of the show as a whole, but I like this song. maybe even love it. :)

:?

It's the worst lyrics Sondheim's ever written.

Plus the show is now horribly dated.

Actor - then you disagree with pretty much the entire profession in the UK on this. I realise Sondheim was unhappy with some of his lyrics (I feel pretty) and they are not his best however, the entire construction of the musical makes it top 5, not to mention Bernstein's music. It's not dated at all, it applies as much to today's society than it did when Shakespeare wrote the original play. That's what makes it so good.

It's only Bernstein's music that makes the show decent. Everything else is pretty bad. I wouldn't even put the show in top 50 nevermind 5.

In case you are applying to drama school - I wouldn't mention your feelings about WSS, it won't go down well. You're 16 years old...I wouldn't have dared to make such brash statements at your age when you have have barely had any time at all to learn about and experience the world of theatre and MT. What about the amazing Jerome Robbins' choreography and direction? That most people still copy today? I won't bother to list all the awards this musical and its originators have won over the years...you clearly don't know what you are talking about in this instance. Sorry.

A quote from the American library of congress:

"When "West Side Story" opened to critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences, it changed the nature of the American musical and even challenged the country’s view of itself. The show dealt seriously with violence, adolescent gangs and racial prejudice—themes rarely addressed in musicals. The musical owed its success largely to composer Leonard Bernstein, director and choreographer Jerome Robbins, lyricist Stephen Sondheim and librettist Arthur Laurents. At a time when most musicals were star vehicles, with separate dancing and singing choruses, "West Side Story" was cast with relative unknowns who acted, sang and danced in this extraordinarily demanding work. All of these elements came together to create a groundbreaking musical."

In a UK national poll for the top 100 musicals of all time, West Side Story was voted 4th by the nation:
