My favorite is the movie soundtrack, because it was the first to flesh out the story more, unlike the dissatisfying Broadway production.

I prefer the Broadway production because it has the most plot. The movie came closer than, say, the original concept recording, but it's still mainly a bunch of songs with the same characters. You have a random Christmas morning leading into everyone worshipping Marilyn Monroe, then suddenly Tina Turner shows up high as a kite and sings a song, turning Roger Dahltrey into a skeleton. Wheras in the Broadway show, the Christmas scene leads into the disasterous babysitting episodes, and those lead right into the pinball thing. Easier to follow. Also, Mrs. Walker doesn't go mad and roll around in beans.

WHAT!!!!!
THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF THIS WEBSITE HAVE DELETED "Broadway Cast Recording" AS AN OPTION!
THIS LEAVES ONLY
"Original Concept Album"
"Original Motion Picture Soundtrack"
"London Symphony Orchestra Performs Selections From Tommy"
and
"Understudy Cast"
AS OPTIONS!
WHAT POSSIBLE JUSTIFICATION IS THERE FOR THIS??????????????????

the who's original was good, but the vocals weren't varied enough. it was more difficult to tell characters apart, espec if u had never heard it before. also the movie soundtrack i liked better for pinball wizard, which is a cool song.
out of interest who owns what in what format?
I own the who original - vinyl
& the soundtrack - vinyl

That's because The Who didn't want guest performers on the record. They wanted to do it all by themselves. Townhend also quashed the idea of bringing in an orchestra to play on the original album.
I love the original album, because of the simplicity of the music. And Moon's drumming, of course.
Andy.

Yeah...I loved the original album before hearing any other versions of it. One of the best rock albums ever. While other recordings are decent enough, the arrangements are so perfect on the original, and much more "rock" than subsequent versions.
