I've asked this question elsewhere in the forum, but it's never been answered: How is the steam whistle usually handled? The resounding answer throughout MdN seems to be that you have to use an actual steam whistle. My question is would an audio recording work? The audience is only going to hear it, so I don't see why this has never been a viable option.

It depends on the volume of the audio recording and how well it's mixed with the action. I myself highly doubt an actual steam whistle is used in every single production.

I did a concert version a few weeks ago that just had a simple mouth-blown whistle operated by one of the percussionists. Wish I could remember exactly what kind of whistle it was- sounded almost exactly like the one used in the OBC recording.
