Post Dialect/Accent Help, please?
Well, I happen to be auditioning for an upcoming production of Sweeney at my school, and I'm struggling a bit trying to find the right dialect for the part of Mrs. Lovett (which I really am striving for).

Would a cockney accent sound out of place? Basically, dialect newbie that I am, I'm not sure what she would be...

Never audition with an accent. Trust me.

Well then, Houston, we have a problem.

I guess my director/teacher never heard of that, because she is DEMANDING we audition in dialect. Am I screwed?

I think that the tip previously mentioned is mainly to not limit yourself. For example, they might not consider you for another part, limited by the accent. I suppose now it is just a matter of getting the dialect down, which I can't offer advice on (I'm awful at accents. Trust me.)

Oh. If your director is demanding it, I guess it would be wise to learn it. However, most directors discourage auditionees from using accents in auditions, and it is generally accepted that you should not. I believe Michael Shurtleff claims he shares this opinion in his book Audition.
