There are some exceptions. While I wouldn't pay Tom, Dick & Harry's Theater Company a red cent, I am currently in a production that's run under the auspices of a Park District Program, and there's a small program fee. Ditto community colleges -- many of them require you to register for a 1-credit course or something to be in the production.

But otherwise, yeah, no.

It's not that unusual, to be honest. I do youth theatre and we have tp pay £50 to be in a show to cover rehearsal costs/ help with production costs etc.

And most amateur theatres round here do the same.

youth theatre is different they offer classes and consider it a training program.

if you ever have to pay to be in a legit regional or community production you are being had.

In the UK most ameture companys have a yearly subscription. But you wouldn't normally pay for seperate shows.

i'd imagine that is something like dues to be in a rep company. again totally different.

we have season memberships where you donate money to the theatre each year. but that neither guarantees you or prevents you from being in a show.

business end and artistic ends of theatre are/ or should be/ totally seperate.

You would have loved what one of the community theatres up here tried to pull recently. They actually sent out an audition announcement stating that there was a $5 "application fee" to audition. Apparently, that was down from the $10 the Board president actually wanted to charge.

They got so much hate e-mail and nasty phone calls that the annoucement was pulled from all the regional boards and re-posted with no "application fee" within 24 hours.
