There's a LOT of talk about who is the best Lovett, but who is the best Sweeney Todd?

George Hearn.

He had the best voice and delivery of all the Sweeney's I've heard/seen, in my opinion.

I think he is best on the "Sweeney Todd Live in Concert with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra" recording. I also think it's the best recording overall of the show.

I don't think that Ceveris was as bad as a lot of people made him out to be. His delievery was very different...and I didn't mind it one bit...his voice was just a bit too gruff for me.

Yeah, I'm really torn between him and Cariou.

Yeah, the real question here is Hearn or Cariou. While I think that they both have moment where one out performs the other, I generally prefer Hearn.

I've seen pictures of Dennis Quilley in the role...anybody know what he was like?

I saw Denis Quilley as Sweeney in the very first London preview at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane back in 1980. I guess I was probably amongst the first few hundred people in the UK to see the show. Denis was a very versatile actor, equally at home in the theatre, in films and on TV. He was basically in the classical Shakespearean mould and had a fine baritone voice. His performance vocally was quite operatic, but with the additional quality of being a fantastic actor as well. I remember vividly the almost tangible terror he brought to the entire theatre during Epiphany, as he entered the front row of the audience and absolutely terrified the gentlemen in the audience! I was a few rows back, but it was one of the most powerful moments I have ever experienced in the theatre.

I run a Sweeney fansite at if anyone's interested in exploring this musical in greater depth.

io would have loved to have seen Quilley in the role. I was a fan of his since Murder on tyeh Orient Express.
and his Charles in High SPirits was so good on the OLC.

Hearn has my vote easily. Cariou a close 2nd and Bob Gunton 3rd.

Thanks to BenjaminBarker for that thrilling story...hey anyone know if Sweeney goes into the first row of the audience for Epiphany in the revival? I'm seeing it on Saturday, like 6th or 7th row from the front and it would be awsome to have Sweeney do that, even if I'm not in the front.
