Neither. Why are these people voting for actors they have actually seen/heard their performances of? It just doesn't make sense why they wouldn't vote for an obscure Sweeney featured on no commercial recordings who played the role 20 years ago.

 Best Sweeney?
As a listening experience, the revival isn't a patch on the OBC. Everything in the revival just sounds so forced - although I can't really say that Cerveris's general sound was one of the things that bothered me.

 Re: Best Sweeney?
I've only heard Len Carirou's Epiphany, and watched the movie with Johnny Depp.
BUT, my Intro To Theatre class watched the version with George Hearn & Angela Lansbury last week to end our play viewings of the semester. I looooved the way Hearn interpreted Sweeney; so maniacal, yet comical at the same time. I absolutely adored the way he delivered Epiphany; SO much feeling and anguish!
Therefore, my vote goes for George Hearn, hands down.

George Hearn Len Cariou Brian Stokes Mitchell Denis Quilley
Though I really wish that Kelsey Grammer did a recording of Sweeney Todd. I would love to see how he portrayed the role

 Re: Best Sweeney?
I think Thomas Allen and Bryn Terfel deserve mentions.
Even if Bryn Terfel only has "Epiphany" and "A Little Priest" recorded.

 Re: Best Sweeney?
I'm only going to rank the Sweeney's I've either seen, or heard close to complete recordings of. I think it's unfair to rank based off of only one or two songs.
1) Len Cariou 2) George Hearn (1982) 3) George Hearn (Concerts) 4) Marc Jacoby 5) Johnny Depp 6) Michael Cerveris

 Re: Best Sweeney?
Personally, I like Hearn the best, but I think that's simply because I was introduced to Sweeney Todd through the Hearn/Lansbury recorded performance DVD. I just love how, after Lovett says 'Good, ya got it?' in A Little Preist, he actually comes out with a full-on "HA!!". Most Sweeney'd I've taken a listen to kind of mutter "Ah..."

 Re: Best Sweeney?
I voted for Cariou because most were voting for Hearn. It is a toss up for me.
