There is indeed a High School Edition. Once being a student at LVA, I saw the production and it does stay true to Sondheim's score, save for changing some of the lyrics, mostly the beggar woman when she is offering herself. She said something like, "Wouldn't you like to be my girlfriend, we'll have a jig-jig, a little bounce around the bush." The Judge's Johanna and Kiss Me are indeed cut. Other than that, most of the show is intact. Glen Edwards, the director, did a fairly decent job, though I didn't like the production as much as others that I have seen in the past.

I saw the LVA production too, and something just hit me right now:

I remember that during 'The Worst Pies in London' scene, Mrs. Lovett did not have any pies at all. The only thing that she was holding in her hand was air. Did the tech kids forgot to put the pie props out or was this intentional?

Hmm...might've been just the way that Mr. Edward directed the show, or it might have been a tech. Who knows.

Anyway, LVA is reviving their production of Sweeney Todd: School Edition on June 9 and 10. I've bought tickets for both nights, seeing at they are taking the show to a festival in Nebraska.

I heard about the HS version, and was really excited I had suggested to our director that we do it next year, since she had no idea what musical to do. She turned it down though , of course, because of the blood and questionable content and because our area is 65% Mormon.

Well, you should have argued the point that Angela Lansbury sang "Not While I'm Around" at the Mormon Cabernacle Choir Christmas Concert. Then you could be like, "See, they did it, so can we!!!" Here's the video I'm talking about:

Do you remember if they had pies out when you went to see it? :P

yeah I've heard. I received this flyer in my mail about the encore. I'm not sure if I can go yet, but I'll see.

hm. Do they do this every year? Because this is the first time I've ever heard about the theatre kids doing an encore, and if they do do this every year... D:. then I missed my chance to see Beauty and the Beast and Miss Saigon again. D:

How can you even cut Kiss Me? Does that also mean that Ladies In Their Sensitivities is cut? And what about the parlor song scene? Is it edited like in most productions

So is the high school edition basically Sweeney Todd: The Movie?

Having seen the high school edition, I can tell you that it is not the movie. From what I remember, they toned down the beggar woman quite a bit, taking out the offering of herself to Anthony. The HS edition also cut some verses of songs and changed notes to suit high school students. Also they use much symoblism when a victim gets their throats cut. They change into a red cloak and hover around Sweeney's shop. Most of the show is intact, but I do prefer the original to anything.

It enfuriates me that they cut "Kiss Me". It's not offensive at all, and if they cut it for time then they have their priorities mussed. It's my favorite series of songs! RAWR.
