Glenn Close was perfect.

Glenn Close. Patti Lupone was a bit to0 strident for me, and I haven't seen/heard the others.

Glen Close. I LOVE La LuPone. I just don't think Norma Desmond was a good role for her.

LuPone, because she didn't play the role like a cartoon character or some cheap imitation of Swanson. She understood Norma's moments of sanity and that she wasn't batshit crazy from Day 1. Not to mention the differences in vocal ability.

I just wish that I could throw Patti into the American Premiere cast album, because the orchestrations are richer in that one and I'd love to hear her sing the "Once upon a time, not long ago..." part.

As an example of how casting against type can work unexpectedly well, the British impressionist/singer/comedian Faith Brown was an excellent Norma in the UK touring version some years back - she could sing and act without resorting to cliches. I've seen the star names play the part and not been nearly so engrossed.

I just fell in love with Glenn's performance after seeing the video of the Albert Hall concert...

lupone was divine, totally memorizing. I've heard good things about Kathryn Evans at the comedy theatre, hope to see her in that soon!

I'd love to find a video of Karen Mason in the role...she was Velma when I saw Hairspray last year and was phenominal...you saw her right Dawn? How was she?
