Post The concept album
Who here likes the 1989/90 concept album?

I think it's a great recording of the songs from StEx. Much better versions of some songs than what I hear on the OLC.

I was so glad that when the tour came to Ottawa, they used the concept album versions. Truly, the best show I saw that year.

Anyway, I love Cohn's tracks on the record. "Pumping Iron," "One Rock and Roll Too Many," and "Light At The End Of The Tunnel" are the highlights. "The Race" is cool as well.

I only wish that "U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D." was included, sung by Dawn Marie Church. But I was told that she was never asked to record it. :( I would love to hear her sing that again!

Overall, I give the concept recording a 8/10

Andy.

It's ok, but a few corrections. It isn't a concept album. It's a collection of singles that were played on the radio to promote the show in the US. It's not a concept of anything, it's just reworked "pop" versions of the songs. It's also not from 1989. The album was released in 1987. Also, Dawn Marie Church wouldn't have been asked to record it, because she wasn't yet in involved in the show. The album was recorded before the Broadway show was cast. Dawn wasn't a name in the Starlight world yet.

If you mean the 1987 New York Concept Album, then I have to say that I do like it and i do listen to it, but it certainly isn't one of my favorite STEX recordings. I do love "Engine of Love", "Only you", and "Make up my heart" on the CD, but the other ones i don't care too much about.

Thanks, Evan. I guess I considered it from '89 when I saw the show in '90 and got the album the previous year (in the "new releases" section of the record store).

(See, Evan can be nice)

I do prefer DeBarge's "Starlight Express" to that of Shell's. Different versions, I know, but I like what DeBarge did. Nicer lyrics as well.

Andy.

Anybody notice Sarah Brightman's cameo in "AC/DC"?
