Well excuse me for not being aware of South Pacific

This makes me a bit sad. Anyone else? "South Pacific" is one of the most wonderful shows ever written.

Any other fans?

I have heard of it, but never saw the movie or performance. At least I'm aware of it! :)

Actually considered watching for the first time today, but then discovered my grandmother no longer seems to own it. :(
I decided on Funny Girl instead.

I'm glad you watched Funny Girl, great stuff. However- just because Funny Girl and South Pacific are both musicals doesn't mean they are in the same genre.
Dawn, what don't you personally like about the made for t.v movie? I haven't seen it but judging from the cast it doesn;t look awful.

Glen Close is awful as nellie 20 years too old for the role. far from a "cockyed optimist she played the role several years AFTER she was Norma Desamond! its rather embarassing.

the changes made in the script especially removing soem of Brackett and Billis' key scenes ..were unforgivable.

cutting Happy Talk.

Harry Connick is quite good except he doesnt even try to hide his creole accent as a philadelphia boy!

Just re-watching all R&H on film this week, and I had never been irritated by the color filters over South Pacific quite as much as this time. Filmed on location, and for some bizarre reason, they put color filters over what seems like half the film. Perhaps it mirrors what was done on stage, but it is very irritating.

Putting them all side by side this week, Carousel and Oklahoma are better than South Pacific, even Sound of Music is superior. But it is there amongst the top group... Cinderella and Flower Drum Song are well below their best.
