It really just depends on your director's interpretation.

I imagine the party guests would come out and bow, then the nuns, then the minor characters like Frau Schmidt and such... then Max, probably with the baroness and Rolf. Then all the children would probably bow together and then individually. Then Capt. Von Trapp, and then Maria.

This. Except I see the Nazi captain who's recruiting Capt. Von Trapp (crap...the name escapes me at the moment) would bow with Frau Schmidt.

I would imagine:

-Party guests/Festival Contestants/New Postulant/Nazis/Nuns/servants/clergy/ensemble
-Frau Schmidt and Franz
-Herr Zeller
-Sisters Berthe, Margaretta, and Sophia
-Max and Elsa
-Children
-Rolf and Liesl
-Mother Abbess
-Captain
-Maria

This is how our production of The Sound of Music was done as well.

When my school did this production, I believe this was the order.

Note: Very few boys other than the leads joined, and all the the nuns were also party guests except for the leads.

Nuns/Party Guests, etc.
Nazis, Party Guest Boys, etc.
Featured Waltzers (stepped up from party guests)
Franz, Ursula, Frau Schmidt
Main nuns (named, or who sang Maria other than Mother Abbess)
The Children
Rolf and Liesl
Elsa
Max
Mother Abbess
Captain Von Trapp
Maria

I can't remember it exactly, but it was something similar to this.

I don't remember the exact order, but I remember my director made the ODDEST choice regarding who *I* bowed with!

I played Herr Zeller and I bowed with..Sister Margaretta and Sister Berthe!!

Oddest bow choice EVER!! Especially because Sister Sophia got screwed and was made to bow along with the un-named nuns! We thought for SURE The three named nuns would bow together and I'd bow with Admiral Von Schriber! But he bowed with the Elberfelds and the random Nazi storm troopers!

I remember someone saying he did it to be ironic. Like, putting the evil Nazi with the lovely singing nuns. lol
