Post Captain von Trapp
What age should the actor be? We are thinking of doing Sound of Music next year and I want to audition for the part. I am 38 but I can play anyone from 30 to 40.

The real Captain von Trapp was 47 when he married Maria and 55 when the family left Austria, but plenty of actors in their mid to late 30s have played the role. He just needs to seem old enough to be convincing as a father whose oldest child is 16. You should be fine.

Including Christopher Plummer, who was 35 when he played Captain Von Trapp. Julie Andrews was not even 30 yet.

Just to resurrect this one - I know that he is a lead but just how much has Captain Von Trapp got to do in the musical?

Is it all dialogue? I know he sings "Edelweiss" but does he sing much else? I'm just trying to get a feel as to whether the part is too big bearing in mind work and family commitments.

Depends on which version of the show you're doing. "Edelweiss" is Captain's only solo, but for the love duet, you'll be singing either "An Ordinary Couple" or "Something Good"; either way, he sings about half of each song. Then if you're including "No Way to Stop it", he sings in the last third of it.

Thanks guys. And as to dialogue, are we talking half the show or relatively small sections?

In the movie at least, he and Liesl sing "Edelweiss" in duet. I love how Charmian Carr's Liesl demolished his alibi about not having sung for a long time - "I remember, Father!"
