Post Rolfe's final scene
Why is Rolfe's final scene in the movie different from the stage version? In the movie, he alerts the Nazis of the Von Trapp's presence, whereas in the stage version, he lets them get by the Nazis without saying anything. I'm surprised to learn that the creative team behind the movie chose to have Rolfe fink on the Von Trapp's. Thoughts?

That's what he did in real life.

No, Rolfe was not real.

Actually, Ernest Lehman wanted the movie's ending to be more suspenseful, so he added the fact that Rolfe turns the family in to make it so.

Is "Nazi" a banned word on these boards?

edit: Oh, I guess it is. Why?

That is SO stupid that N.AZI is censored. It makes it quite hard to talk about certain shows.

Try using the word fascist instead of the shorted name for the national socialist german workers' party, it would be just as accurate.

Post Stage vs. screen Rolf
I feel that perhaps the stage Rolf ties in more with the rest of the R&H canon and makes the film Rolf a little two-dimensional.
I like the stage Rolf a little more because he gives Liesl some hope that he will wean off the blinding influence of the totalitarian ideology that has so corrupted all that's good about him. This is in tune with Lietunant Cable realising that because he was taught his prejudices, he has shunned Liat. However, even if the celluloid portrayal of Rolf appears two-dimensional, it points out the danger that Captain von Trapp and his family were facing in the face of the odious, monstrous, totalitarian ideology that was pursuing them.

Gah!
I read about why they changed that last scene for him somewhere...if I ever find the book I'll post what it said.
