What? Dancing gardeners???

That's not where it ends. According to an article in Playbill, the ghost characters were cut, except for Mary's deceased parents and a host of female servants joined the gardeners in the new production numbers. No big surprise, then, that the show barely managed to stay afloat on the West End for four months and that the anticipated Broadway transfer never materialised.

The time does feel right for a revival of this show - but please, let's go with the original 1991 version. Can anyone remember which version was followed for the World AIDS Day benefit concert in 2005? A new production will open in Toronto in March next year, but there seems to be no word on which version is being used.

Are both versions licensed for production?

I think you're getting confused between adaptation and acting style. It's certainly the adaptation of the show - in other words, how the book and the score were changed - that people in this thread have been debating in this thread.

If you mean the one with Laura Benanti and Steven Pasquale, it was the Broadway version. The entire second act is on youtube.

I also prefer the Broadway version to the London version.

Perhaps there is some hope that the new Canadian production will be based primarily on the Broadway version, with minimal changes, even though Mirvish is punting a new adaptation of the show for their production.
