I figured that much, but it's not a really effective joke if we've never seen him before!

^^ Tis true. I believe he just posted it because he thought I would get a kick out of it. That story about the person who didn't know Anthony Rapp was also in the movie, is his. We were talking about it on AIM prior to his posting, as he had questioned what I was up to.

I laughed too at even the thought that the Spike Lee reference was to shooting drugs.

But then, I guess some people aren't familiar with who Spike Lee is....

...I just don't even know lol.

*side note of also amusing* My friend just told me that someone, having a serious conversation about Rent, said "I thought the person who played Mark in the OBC was so much better then the guy who played Mark in the film..." #-o

Wait--the Marks are the same? But this changes everything...My whole world is crashing down... :(

Haha...Why are people so retarded?! Like the whole "Spike Lee doing drugs" thing--obviously Sesame Street Live was sold out so they had to attend a performance of a "big kid show" with (oh no!) complex themes (for example, a director shooting (up?) a movie down the street). Dearie me. What is the world coming to?

This is why RENT is becoming more and more irrelevant as a theater piece. Much like HAIR before it, it's becoming a period show filled with references not many people know...

that doesn't make it irrelevant, that just means its become a period piece and people will have to look for the references

Bwahaha, that fact that someone thinks that Spike Lee was a drug dealer/addict "shooting down the street" is quite hilarious. =D>

This was set in about 1989, wasn't it? So that would be.. umm... Do The Right Thing or wasn't Mo' Betta Blues one of Spike's?

Isn't it possible he's making fun of Mark?

Because Mimi, a person who doesn't know either Roger or Mark or their respective professions, would totally get the in-joke.

I know. I find it quite possible Roger's joking with himself. He's not exactly charming Mimi the rest of the scene anyway. Antisocially making a reference Mimi wouldn't get would not surprise me at all. At this point in the story, Roger is very withdrawn and unconcerned with anyone but himself.
