Could you elaborate on your question? Because my smartass answer is that it looks like sheet music, with staves and measures notes and rests and key signatures.

If you want an idea of how the music is, I'd say listen to the OBC recording. But the record is changed somewhat for commercial reasons, as well as having incidental music and some smaller songs cut entirely.

I can't comment on how difficult the music is to play, because I didn't play in the pit. There are some odd time signatures in some of the songs. But I believe that incompetent musicians have no business ever playing in public, so unusual time signatures or intricate note runs shouldn't be an issue.

That's a little arrogant... not all musicians are to the same caliber that you seem to require. Pete Townshend of The Who can't play a solo to save his life, and Irving Berlin could only play in certain keys.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect musicians playing in an orchestra pit to be able to play everything the score demands. That's my specific point.

Yeah. I just misunderstood your phrasing. Someone playing in a pit orchestra should know the demands of the score before they take the job. You wouldn't suddenly throw the guy playing piano for Godspell a copy of "The Light In The Piazza" and say "Now, play THAT."

Yah.

I'm extremely soured by the pit we had for Pippin last month. Several people obviously hadn't practiced, nor had they any requisite sightreading skills to cover up their laziness. That and just bad technique, especially from the squeaking trumpet player. Ugh.
