Post If You Were Directing This (HS/College), What Would You Do?
If you were to direct a high school or college production of this (and, if by some miracle, the rights were given to community theaters), what would you do? Me, I would:

1. During Carlotta's "Think of Me", I'd only have her get as far as "On that day, that not-so-distant day..." part, I'd have the piece of scenery start to fall.

2. During "MOTN", I'd have the Phantom take the dust cover off the mirror (or whatever the Christine dressed as a bride dummy is standing in) off, then get behind Christine while she's looking at, then reaching for, it, so he could catch her. If the actor playing the Phantom happens to be a football player, I'd have him carry Christine to the bed, and if not, I'd just have him slowly lower her to the floor and cover her with his cape.

What about you?

For me I would try to make the sets, costumes, wigs, look more Leorux. Like having Christine and Raoul blonde*and having him a mustache* Also having Erik have a full face deformatiy and wearing a full faced black mask.

He was supposed to have a full mask in the stage show originally (hence the logo) but they found it got in the way of singing.

They have an opening for his mouth, don't they?

If it was high school, I would make sure that everyone who was cast in the roles have proper vocal technique and classical training, especially for Christine, Carlotta, and the Phantom. I mean, I'd prefer if everyone did ... but you can't always get that in high school. I would make sure that they took proper vocal health under consideration (regardless of a show, I feel that is important).

I don't know the set well enough, though .. I do really need to see it again.

I would make Carlotta more of a serious diva (while still being funny) than just being "comedy". Also...
"Prima Donna" < Andre and Firmin be on their knees during "Your devotees are on their knees to implore you..." and trying to big Carlotta (but Piangi, as well) to sing.
"Think of me" I would force Christine to act happy and delightful in this song. I'm sick of hearing/seeing SE Christines who have this :| expression on their faces while singing the song! It's terrible this way!

Simple list for me:

1. Make the cuts used in the "Vegas spectacular" version, but keeping the chandelier drop at the end of Act One, and the intermission. This particular rendition of the show proved that cuts could be made to the show and still preserve its integrity. High school or college students, the primary audience, may be particularly unwilling to sit through the whole show.
2. +1 on the Leroux-inspired designs (blonde Christine, blonde Raoul with mustache, Phantom in full faced black mask with a full facial deformity).
3. +1 on casting for proper vocal technique and classical training.
4. +1 on instilling proper vocal health habits.
5. +1 on playing Carlotta as more than just comic relief.

Things I don't agree with from the posts of others:

1. Forcing Christine to act happy during "Think of Me." Did you read the lyrics? She's telling the guy not to forget her when he goes away; it's a goodbye song. That's hardly a happy situation! I can see forcing a smile, but acting totally happy that he's leaving her? Come on now.

I did not address specific blocking, as I thought some of it was either obvious or already used in current productions (the lyrics in "Prima Donna" refer to Andre and Firmin being on their knees, so it follows that they would be on their knees; similarly, I'm reasonably sure the set piece always falls where the OP says it does during Carlotta's "Think of Me" and that the Phantom catches Christine when she faints in "MOTN").
