Post Carlotta's Dress
Does anyone know the name of the style of dress Carlotta wears in Il Muto in the movie version?

Erm... fluffy?

Ehe... No, she wears a dress in Rococo style, but it's by no mean a period dress. It reminds of a "Robe a la Fran├žaise" in terms of shape, but it lacks the big pleats in the back (1) and the function with an overdress being worn over a decorative stomacher and an underskirt (2). It illudes it, but the bodice is separate from the skirt. The bodice is also off-shoulders, which actually is more Baroque.

A style reminding a bit of this, is the "Rome a l' Allemande", German gown. It could have separate bodice and skirt - but as far as I know it would also have the pleats in the back (1).

Either how, it's probably meant as a opera costume showing how 19th century people envisioned the style of the 18th century. They haven't tried to recreate history, and therefore the dress doesn't have a specific name.

The pleats in the back is what defines this style. The movie costume doesn't have these pleats, instead it repeats the split skirts and decorations, while the bodice looks like a "Robe a l' Anglaise" in the back. Don't be scared by these expressions, it basicallt means "French dress" an "English dress"...

Bodice and skirt is on one piece here, almost like a dressing gown, but of course made of thicker materials and way more ornamented
