I would have cast Paul Stanley as The Phantom, since ALW wanted a rock star in the role.

But Paul sucked as the Phantom...

Only if you go by the one bootleg that has circled the globe. That was early in his run. Problem with bootlegs is they don't always capture a great performance.

Andy.

Would also like to get the original keys for Christines songs back, and a proper Super E instead of the very anticlimatic Eb :P But okay I guess it's that way because of ER- so another Christine would be kinda neat as well;) but again that leads back to the director, whit a proper director the cast would never have been that way

The more I watch Ken Russell's video for the single version of the title track, the more I think he would have been uniquely suited to take on the actual film.

The cast. Gerard Butler is a good actor, I just didn't like him as the Phantom. I can't take his singing seriously. I usually end up making fun of him.

The director. If ALW had simply ditched Joel Schumacher and picked someone else who wasn't so intent on casting a 30-something Phantom and a teenage Christine, they might've gone for actual theatre performers at least in the main roles (rather than actors with little to no singing experience), and the film would have been much better both as an adaptation of the original musical and as a movie in its own right.

Am I the only one who thinks the movie would be better if it was a Don Bluth animated feature?

Nope. But that could be because I just really like animated musicals.

The Phantom. Emmy Rossum's crappy Christine singing was okay, but it was Gerard Butler's singing that bugged me the most.

It's a musical. Cast someone who can SING, for crying out loud!

There are LOTS of things I would change, but if I have to pick just one:

I think they should have tried to get established Broadway or West End performers to play the leads. Rossum and Butler aren't bad singers by any means, I just didn't think that either of them were really fit for their roles. I feel like the makers of the film were too focused on getting familiar faces in there and didn't put much thought into ALW's original intent for the characters

Definitely the two leads. Emmy Rossum has a pretty voice, but she did not put any intensity into the songs, most notably the title song. The end should get louder and more intense, but she kept it the same level the whole time, and the ending note was completely anticlimactic. Gerard Butler is a good actor, but he does not have the enchanting, ethereal voice of the Phantom, which is what attracts Christine to him in the first place. Also, the pathetic makeup on the Phantom. They hardly covered up any of his face, and what was there wasn't very horrifying.
