Post subject:  Oklahoma Hello

I've just been cast as Ado Annie, which I'm thrilled about, but I'm a bit nervous about doing the Oklahoma Hello with Will. In most of the versions I've seen, he basically assists her in doing a back flip. I can't even do a forward roll!

Have you seen it done any other way? Or could you give me any tips for doing the back flip move?

The first time I did Oklahoma, our Will assisted Ado with the backflip. The second time, since our Will was a bit scrawnier, I think he just did a simple dip. Honestly, it's all in the execution. As long as Ado looks like she's being flung around, the bit will work.

Is it indicated in the script that it *has* to be a backflip?

I played Ado (and LOVED it). We originally planned to do the backflip. We rehearsed it that way all they way till dress rehearsals. However, I never quite got the landing, and one night at dress I fell and almost badly injured myself. So, we changed it to him spinning me out (as in a swing dance), and spinning me back into a dipped kiss. It worked well. And, after saying "Hello, Will!", I shoved him onto the floor and planted one on him. The audience loved it.

Moral of the story is: there is a way to do it if you're not comfortable with the flip. It's not in the script.
