Post Gertie Accent
I've seen some productions when Gertie had a midwestern accent, but about 95% of them that I have seen, Gertie has had a southern accent, including when my double cast and I. Well, I'm just wondering what y'all have heard...

Well, I did more of a southern accent with hard r's...

Random, but in a class I took (yes, I am at a major university and they had an entire class on the stage musicals of R&H in the 1940s - does that rock or WHAT!?) our professor suggested she might possible be Jewish? This came from the point that Ali Hakim is often portrayed with jewish stereotypes, and in the same vein, her father is a merchant (store owner) and she, like Ali, is treated as if she is not a true part of the community...as would have been possible for a Jewish family in the midwest around 1900. Granted, they both have reasons for not quite fitting in, and I am not saying I agree - but I just thought I'd mention what he said :D

whoa...

if she was, then that would be REALLY funny, because I was the only gentile in the ENTIRE cast, and I got cast as a "jew" if that's right

that'd be funny... never thought of it that way

but the more I think about it, the more it make sense...

a gentile is a non-jew

or, from Dictionary.com:

1. One who is not of the Jewish faith or is of a non-Jewish nation.
2. A Christian.
3. Archaic. A pagan or heathen.
4. Mormon Church. A non-Mormon.

I am the first definition, and that is what I was referring to.

When I played Gertie, I didn't do any accent at all -- other than a really bubbly, affected personality whenever I walked on stage. Gertie was one of the best roles in my opinion. I got all kinds of laughs!

huh. Now that I think about it a mid-western accent would be pretty funny... yet somewhat out of place... whatever. Both are pretty good. I vote for both!

In the production I'm currently involved in, Gertie is being played with a more midwestern accent. Though, since she is very bubbly and giggly, I can imagine southern working very well.
