Post Audition Song For Marian
My school is going to have a production of The Music Man for our fall musical. I feel like I could be a good Marian but I'm not sure what song to use for an audition song.
I can hit up to a C6(?-the one two barlines above the staff), but I sound best up to the A below that. I have a decent range, and I can probably also sing an alto range. I have dirty blonde hair and I wear glasses, but if needed I could wear contacts. I could sing any amount of the song, but I probably won't get to the end. I'm a bookworm, and that could help my character devolpment.
My chorus teacher has shown us the 1962 version, and I have watched the 2003 one also.

Some songs I was thinking about doing, but probably wouldn't work were Once Upon A December (doesn't show off my range, having trouble finding music) Somewhere That's Green (not the the right feeling, not sure if I can pull off or need the accent) and Goodnight My Someone (it's from the show!!!)

I would also try to avoid any songs from the Sound of Music (we just did it last year) and duets, as it is a solo audition.

It is not a good idea to do Goodnight My Someone, it's from the show, like you said.

I would suggest:

A Cockeyed Optimist from South Pacific
A Wonderful Guy from South Pacific
I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair from South Pacific
Hello, Young Lovers from The King and I
Shall I Tell You What I Think of You? from The King and I
Falling in Love With Love from The Boys of Syracuse
I Got Lost In His Arms from Annie Get Your Gun

Hmm... I am going to have to disagree with the previous suggestions. While they are good period-wise, they are not going to be good indicators of your range and are therefore not appropriate character-wise.
I'd suggest:
If I Loved You (Carousel)
What Good Would the Moon Be? (Street Scene) (I auditioned with this song and got the part of Marian 10 years ago)
You Are Love or After the Ball (Show Boat)

And, it's always worth asking the director (if the audition notice doesn't state otherwise) if they'd rather hear a song form the show or something else. I'd prepare Goodnight My Someone and My White Knight for auditions or callbacks either way. (we sang My White Knight at callbacks)

That sounds like a good idea, and I see you have experience! Thanks!

I actually auditioned for Marian in my school's production of The Music Man with "Somewhere That's Green" but didn't get in. I think it's because I blew the character voice though that shouldn't matter since Marian's not a character role.
