Post subject:  Rights?

So I've heard some people talking about being in Lion King, but only one of them admitted to doing it w/out the rights.

So... are the rights out or not? I didn't see it on MTI, but I'm notorious for not seeing stuff.

Not to my knowledge they're not.

Our school is attempting to get the rights for 2009-2010...
Our director said they have maybe 20% of chance for having it but he also said that he'll never do the show without the rights.
The budget for the 2009-2010 musicals of our high school is around 150 000$, so maybe for a lot of money they will have the rights (damn I would give a lot to be a year younger to play in it)

Strangely, I had a dream where we did it last night. It was so amazing, that when I woke up, I jumped on MDN to see if anyone knew.

I wish that my dream would come true.

No stress dreams for me! It was so realistic, that's what really got me. People were casted perfectly, it was done within my high school's capablities and still was pulled off awesomely. The Best part was that I was Nala, both young and older Nala. Made me happy dance around my room until I stumbled over something I didn't pick up.

TLK is amazing. The rights probably won't be released until it either closes or starts doing a helluva lot worse than it usually does. It's still selling out and is undoubtedly Disney's stage baby. They'd pull out all the stops to prevent this one from closing.

I doubt the rights are out now. They may be, but I doubt it. Our theatre has wanted to do The Lion King for a while but we haven't because the rights and because it is still on Broadway.

It'll be obvious when the rights come out. Theatres will be doing it left and right just like they were when Beauty and the Beast was released.

While The Lion King involves African culture, you hit the nail on the head - the characters aren't even human. It shouldn't matter what races play which character (I have noticed Scar, Timon, Pumbaa, Zazu, and Ed have a tendency to be cast Caucasian though for some odd reason). There are plenty shows about white culture that have had other races in the cast before - the white culture that apparently does not exist. Or does it not exist because we don't feel comfortable with it doing so?

I do agree that the show involves much spectacle, culture aside. It would be difficult for amateur groups to copy the original Broadway design. They would need to come up with their own ideas that fit small budgets. It's happened when other shows have been released and I'm sure it'll happen when The Lion King is too.
