I feel bad for Scar. He's sort of like Severus Snape: a jerk, but misunderstood.

I would argue that such an analogy can only be applied extremely loosely. Whilst Scar may have possessed legitimate reasons to believe he could rule in a preferable manner to Mufasa, his willingness to murder his brother and nephew to achieve this end, coupled with his jealous guarding of power after assuming command, appear to indicate a selfish desire for personal gain which contrasts starkly with the life-threatening risk undertaken by Snape out of love for Lily. Furthermore, at no point did Scar exhibit a confliction of loyalty or moral questioning of his actions beyond the fear of his wrongdoing being discovered; he was always operating under his own agenda.

In short, the extent to which Scar is 'misunderstood' is highly debeteable whilst to describe him as a 'jerk' is rather an understatement to put it mildly.

This thought recently occured to me: After all Scar went through to become king, he wound up being a terrible leader (which I find very refreshing). But if you look at the root of the problem, the Pridelands had suffered a drought. This could be easily fixed, but Scar still acted like the weight of the world was on his shoulders.
