 Re: Les Mis FAQ
Funny you should mention that -- In the most recent casting call for the National Tour, they were looking to cast Valjean and Marius as baritones, rather than tenors (don't recall Enjolras). As a baritone with a solid top "A" and bit above that with a chest/head mix, I approve this message.

 Re: Les Mis FAQ
The same !
I think a high baritone Valjean and Marius could add a lot to the character... I see Enjolras more as a tenor. Not just for the vocal range, but also for the voice color corresponding to the character.

Yes, the voice color is actually why Russell Crowe's Javert is one of my favorites so far. His dark, heavy tone is perfect for a menacing character like Javert.

 Re: Les Mis FAQ
Have there been any baritone Marius...es? I know one guy who's a baritone and played Marius in the School Edition, but that's not quite the same. I mean, I think of Hugh Panaro, Michael Ball, and whoever it was in the US tour - those guys were all tenors.

Ah. Carlos Marin, right. I think I read that somewhere, yeah. Frangoulis is a tenor according to Wikipedia, though.

 Re: Les Mis FAQ
I'm a baritone and once posted an audio of me singing "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables" on here. I think I sounded 'aight, but I just barely reached the "beeeeeeecAAAAAAME their last communion..." part.
That part of the song is very uncomfortable for me to sing. It's not necessarily about the notes being too high; I can sing those outrageously high falsetto parts in "Bring Him Home" and can sing the higher version of "pre-TEN-diiiiing" from "On My Own" in the original key just fine and that's a chick song! It's more about the way the voice sits on those notes, just feels icky. Can't describe it.

 Re: Les Mis FAQ
Yeah, that song covers a range of A2-G4 and it's in the baritone volume of the Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology. I know he has a few high Gs in "One Day More." I don't don't about his stuff in the rest of the show - "A Little Fall of Rain" isn't high at all, I don't recall any particular high notes in "A Heart Full of Love" or "In My Life," either. But judging from that, I'd say his stuff is very, very doable for a baritone.
Y'know, if I were in charge of casting I'd go for contrast with Enjolras. If I cast Enjolras as a tenor, I'd cast Marius as a baritone, and vice-versa.
