Post Shall I Tell You...completely sung?
When I watched King and I in Singapore twelve days ago, one thing that surprised me was the fact that Anna sang Shall I Tell You What I Think of You all the way through. Although this intrigued me, I felt that maybe I'm more used to it being part spoken and part sung. Which approach is more accurate and, more dramatic? I like what Deborah Kerr and Marni Nixon did on the film soundtrack, and what Donna Murphy did.

Have you any thoughts on which is the most effective way for Anna to perform this song? Gertie, Murphy and the Nixon-Kerr combination offer three strikingly different approaches, but is it most effective for Anna to half-speak and half-sing her way through? I suspect this might be so.

It was never intended to be completely sung. any director who takes that approach is way off base and in complete opposition to Oscar Hammerstien's intent.

Was that song even in the film? I don't remember it being there, but I could be wrong. It's been a long time since I've watched that movie.

It was never in the film. But it was recorded, and is included on the soundtrack album/CD.
