Post I got the Glenn Carter version for Christmas...
I asked for Jesus Christ Superstar for Christmas, expecting either the film or the new one with Tim Minchin. Instead I got the Glenn Carter one, and I've heard bad things about it. (I saw his version of Gethsemene and that 'scream' was pitiful) So is it any good, or should I just go and watch the 70s film on Youtube so I can still get my christmas present?

Go watch the ORIGINAL movie on YT. Yes it might overstate it's meaning, with the tanks, and guns, but the remakes are no where near as good. That was why some of the movie cast still tours to this day. Because they are better then the others that came after them :)

I find it incredibly campy. The acting is over the top. Glen Carter's voice is whiney. The Pilate is unintentionally hilarious (in a good way). Some of the symbolism is neat, and the orchestrations are nice. But overall, I think if you're not already familiar with the show, it could be a huge turn-off.

Absolutely check out the 1973 version.

I like the staging and the concept. I find the cast very fresh and new and exciting.

To be fair, she got punched in the stomach years ago and still whines about it. My advice? Go with the '73 film.

Was there an actual artistic reason for the campy acting?

Marvin, you are the one who brought up that punch not me.

the acting isnt campy os much as heightened reality.. makes it more exciting and gives it a sense of energy and drive. while I like alot of the performers in the '73 film.i fid they sound better and more energetic on the broadway and concept recordings. alos Jewison's concept for the film is really trite.
