Post How young could Mary Magdalene be?
Hi everyone,
I was just wondering what do you think the limit would be, I mean the age range?
Could she be underage?
In her 30's?
What has hapenned in past productions you have been in?

I'd say she could conceivably be played by somebody between 20 and 40, tending toward the midpoint of that. The character has a maturity to her but still a youthful presence. She is a mezzo-soprano, I think - which very generally suggests somewhere between an ingenue (young soprano) and the mother figure (older alto).

Productions I've seen have tended toward older Marys (like 35 and older) but I suspect this was some degree of B.S. theatre politics/favoritism.

All the audition notices for pro productions that I've seen list her as 20 to late 30s, to play opposite a Jesus who is anywhere from 25 to 35. I actually kind of like the idea of an older Mary, unlike Vichysois, because an older Mary (preferably with a regal and mysterious sort of air) makes for a much more interesting portrayal of someone who is disillusioned, hurt, vulnerable, with the pain of one who has been made to believe again after she was determined not to because of the hurts she had experienced. That, to me, is more interesting if the character is played by someone more mature, voluptuous, and womanly (i.e., older, toward the 40s spectrum), someone who's been around the block a few times and has never seen anyone like this kid, someone who brought her even remotely close to believing she was a person and not someone else's chew toy.
