Post Interesting Joanna Gleason snippet in New York magazine
I just read a little mini-interview with Joanna Gleason and I wanted to share one of the questions with you all:

"Q: Have you had difficulty mastering a Sondheim song?
A: When he first gave me 'It Takes Two', I said to him, 'You know, parts of this go higher than I'm used to singing. Are you sure I can handle this?' And he said, 'You know what? I wrote this song for your voice. If you have a problem with that, go see a shrink.'"

I thought it was very interesting that It Takes Two proved to be so problematic for Gleason, because I always assumed that her most demanding song in the show was Maybe They're Magic. Thoughts?

Other than the fact I love Sondheim? No, no thoughts. :)

Ok, that was a lie. Interesting! Does that mean he didn't even include a WRITE A SONG HERE in the script until after she had been cast or did he simply rewrite it to suit her vocally?

Well, he's certainly been known to write for specific performers (eg. Elaine Stritch, Angela Lansbury, Glynis Johns).

Didn't he write the role of the Witch for Bernie?
