Post Into the Woods Modernized?
Should Into the Woods be modernized? The director I have right now is trying to give it a contemporary swing, but I don't know if I really see where he's coming from.

Think Romeo & Juliet the remake with Leonardo DiCaprio for Into the Woods.

Examples:
He wants the Steward to shoot Jack's Mom with a gun.
He would like to see some characters dress fancy like the Mysterious Man in a suit. *Note: Our Mysterious Man & Narrator are two different people.
He wants to take out the trance that the witch as in the beginning, as well as, any kind of levitating.
He doesn't want the witch to eat the bug in the beginning of the 2nd act, but the Baker & Wife to simply get upset over her stepping on it.

What are your opinions/thoughts on this?

I am in this cast and our director...ugh....I dont like the whole modernized thing at all...Like he only wants 3 of us to be classical fairytale characters then the rest are going to be completely different. Its dumb

A modernized version of into the woods could work if they wrote it all over again with new music and lyrics to fit the time period. Kind of like Hoodwinked.

It should absolutely NOT be modernized. That would ruin everything.

Which three aren't going to be modernized?

I've thought about modernizing the costumes before. Prom dresses, jeans, tuxedos, and red hoodies... but the gun is dumb, because he's not trying to kill her, he's trying to do something to get her attention that he doesn't realize will harm her so much. He would know the gun's gonna kill her. The Mysterious Man in a suit makes no sense. Princes? Sure. But the Mysterious Man has been living in the woods for 20 or 30 years...

Most productions don't do the levitating, so that's not a big deal... and the trance... I don't understand how taking that out would "modernize" it. Same for the bug... that's just softening a gag and making it not funny.

What he means about the levitating and the bug is that he wants the Baker and his wife to still react to it even though she wont do it...
And the three chars are Cinderella, Little Red, and Jack

Ew. That's my response. I love the old time-y feel to it. It's more like a fairytale. I love it.

Here's a good example:

He wants the Steward to be like James Bond.

That was my first thoughts exactly, and I'm trying so hard to be open to the idea...

Ugh...

How do you convince a director, his direction is not appropriate?
