Post Herbie after the show
What do you think happens to Herbie after he leaves Rose? The Herbie in our production had a theory that the whole show was a dream, like that one episode of Dallas. What are your theories?

I always felt he left on to go on back to what he was doing originally, prior to meeting Rose.

I like to think that Rose had nothing to gain after "Miss Gypsy Rose Lee" became the great success that her mother never was, so she sought out Herbie after the glimmer of reconciliation with Louise that we see at the end of the show and took him up on his offer of marriage.

Then again, it's a real life story, so one would have to look at what actually happened to whomever Herbie was based on.

Herbie was a mix of three real life people.

And Rose was a lesbian, so I don't think she sought after him anytime soon. Instead, she opened a boarding house for Lesbians. And no, I'm not making that up.

Well obviously if the boarding house is true, she would have to be bisexual rather than lesbian. If not she would not have had 2 daughters.

Just because she was married and had kids doesn't mean she couldnt have been a lesbian. So many people come out of the closet after they're married and have kids. In fact, I know several people whose parents have done so.

Rose did what was expected of her as a woman during that time period: she got married and had kids. Besides, she probably just had kids so she'd have pupils to make famous, and therefore make herself famous. I doubt June and Louise are any kind of reflection on her sexuality as a whole. Just sayin'

My theory?

If you've ever watched The Simpsons, there's this charmingly pathetic, hopeless loser of a guy named Lionel Hutz, who fails at everything he does, business, love or suicide. He's always getting fired, and he can't hold a job or a girlfriend for more than a week. But he's so earnest and sincere about it all that you always feel sorry for him and kind of root for him. I think THAT'S Herbie.
