Post Rose...what is her main obstacle?
I'm filling out a questionaire on Rose for my acting class and I'm stuck on this question. What would you consider to be Rose's main obstacle? Insights are welcomed.

I'm not sure if this is her obstacle, exactly, but it's interesting...

http://sunday-in-the-park.com/sondheim/ ... nlahr.html

"Her pride and self-fulfillment depend on her daughters leaving her behind and "doing better" than she. In "Rose's Turn," Sondheim dramatizes the pathos of her vicarious life."

So... the very thing that she's obsessively working towards, if/when she achieves it, will itself just highlight her own failure.

I also think she didn't go as far as she wanted with June ... or any of her children ... or even herself subtly as well.

I thought it was blatantly obvious she didn't go as far as she wanted with herself (Rose's Turn)..Unless I've misunderstood what you mean.

I think it's her definition of success. She wants so desperately to be loved, and thinks that to be loved, she has to achieve something that'll gain her attention. She even rejects those who actually love her, probably because she can't really believe they are able to love her until she's achieved that success.

True.

But I mean, it's subtle until that part.

Yeah. Rose hopes that turning her kids into stars will make up having never been successful herself.
She eventually has to come to the conclusion that living her dreams through her kids didn't make her get noticed. It did the exact opposite when her kids grew up because she didn't have a life of her own. She got lonely and empty once she realized that she wasn't needed anymore.

ROSE: Listen. About that school, I could open one. For kids, as you said. But kids grow up.

Most people don't realize that Rose does not repent herself after her nervous breakdown. The show ends with her going on about another dream she had. Scary stuff!!

I don't think it really makes sense for Rose to repent in the last scene. Rose is who she is, she will always yearn for attention and recognition. It would be unrealistic and contrived for her to completely let go of that, even after having a mental breakdown.
I like the ending, actually. It's the perfect way to cap off Rose's time in the show, it leaves the audience with the image of her always dreaming bigger.

The thing is, if I remember right, the real Rose didn't repent or apologize or anything. That was written in to sort of end the musical on a slightly happier note.
