Post "Momma's Talkin' Soft"
Did anyone get the new Patti LuPone Gypsy recording? It includes a number of cut songs, one of which is called "Momma's Talkin' Soft", a number that June and Louise sing as part of a quarter with Rose and Herbie singing "Small World". I'm surprised that they didn't add it back in to the actual show for the revival.

Yes, I thoroughly enjoy this song.

I like the song out of context on the CD but I think in the show it would cheapen Rose and Herbie's relationship.

I enjoy "Soft" as well, but "If Momma Was Married" serves the same purpose, so I can't say that the show suffers without it.

Yeah, that was my only thought.

It's funny, though, the reason why they cut it has nothing to do with that. It's because the original Louise was afraid of heights and they had placed the girls singing on a very tall piece of scenery.

I like the song; it's nice to have it on the cd. I don't really know if it would have benefited the show immensely, but I doubt it would have been worse off because of it. Regardless I'm happy we have it to listen to.

I heard the song on the OBC and I found it rather irritating. I'm glad that it was cut from the show.

Well, they say you criticize what you see in yourself. So that's a valid point!

The show would undoubtedly be a poorer show had this song ultimately been included in the original production and, as Gypsy is incredibly sound in terms of its dramaturgy, it would have just shown poor judgment to insert it into the revival. One of the things that is remarkable about Gypsy is that there isn't anything spare in terms of the score; you can't remove a single song without taking something away from the show. If one added any of the cut material back it, that would no longer be the case.

Later days
David

I would almost say that, that song is almost an entirely different song than the one on the 2008 album. See if you can find it (maybe someone uploaded it to YouTube?)

Indeed. Both cut songs were presented in "interpretation" forms, not their accurate show arrangements, on the OBC.

To hear how they would actually sound, one can listen to the New Broadway Cast's "bonus tracks" section.

Personally, though, I prefer the old "Nice, She Ain't."
