Lnsbury is FAR from rushed. she is the most complete Rose yet. the finest.

I meant the cast album itself. Her performance is aces.

I think they are referring to the actual quality of the cast recording not the performance.

Yes, thank you. I'm in no position to judge her performances on stage because I wasn't alive at the time to see them, but I agree she's the saving grace on an otherwise butchered cast album.

^^How does that have any relevence to Gypsy being recorded???

But, no, sadly the LuPone revival was NOT videotaped outside of the Lincoln Center archives. They were SUPPOSE to tape the final performance, but sadly, the review on Playbill.com about the final performance said that the previously announced moving cameras (which would NOT have been used for the Lincoln Center archives anyways) were not there. My guess is, they couldn't arrange for them since the production closed much sonner than previously thought. Such a shame, too. I wanted a DVD of it so badly. Oh well, my bootleg isn't too bad :P

You do realise that those Mame excepts are basically from someones home movie, with the cast recording dubbed over the original sound, not from an archival or commercial recording, don't you? It's a completely different kettle of fish.

Yes I know that. But still, even the archival footage that goes to the Lincoln Center database may only be marginally better -- not unless they perform it with MORE LIGHTS and forego the spots.

Duh!! Isn't it obvious?? To show you the quality of merely recording a regular stage performance.

I think you're underestimating how dire the quality of those Mame clips are. They're basically no better than period bootlegs. I'm sure the quality of the archive tapes is variable and, believe me, I know how bad a straight taping of a show can be. But at least the camera would be well-positioned and so on. It's not meant to be a perfect filming or for commercial release; it's intended to be an archival record of the production.

But what does the MAME video have to do with recent professional show recordings? There have been tons done in the past to know it can work just fine..

Look at the quality of those clips. Haven't you heard of "A picture is worth a thousand words"? That should explain it.

Show me other RECORDINGS of Broadway performances that are better than that. It'll be the same with GYPSY because of the 'spotlight' business.

Wow, that's just ignorance. Look up the 1991 Into the Woods DVD, or even 2006's Company dvd. Perfect quality.
