Oh Salome come on. Crista Moore was good but she does not hold a candle next to Laura here.

Patti LuPone.

I've only seen video clips of her, and hopefully, I will see her this fall.
She doesn't have to act in this show.
Because she IS Mama Rose.

That, and the role was written for Ethel Merman. The problem? Ethel Merman was more of a singer who acts. La LuPone is both an actress and a singer. And she is the Merman of this... era. Therefore, it's like Mama Rose was written for LuPone before she was... well, I can't say born... before she was famous.

Mine would be LuPone, followed closely by Russell. I saw LuPone in Gypsy last June and thought she was amazing. I haven't heard Lansbury in the role yet.

I'm probably going to get skewered for this but I just don't think Angie was right for Rose. She just seemed way too refined and put-together for the part---in my opinion, Rose needs to be convincing as a person who is a failure at life. That said, I adore Angie otherwise but I don't feel that Rose was the best match of a role for her.

1. Ethel Merman
2. Patti LuPone
3. Tyne Daly

Bernadette didn't quite fit my image of the role either but she did interesting things with the show.

Sondheim, Laurents and Styne all said Angela was the one who gave Rose a soul. Angela Lansbury is one of the greatest actresses the world has ever seen. To even put her in the same cat. with people like Patti Lupone is unfair (to Patti that is).

Please watch the following clip:

During Rose's Turn please show me where she is "refined and put together". Lansbury's "Rose's Turn" remains the most frantic and maniacal performance to date. Watching that performance is like watching a true master class. Lansbury is the only one who truly seems to be having a nervous breakdown. She also does all of this while belting to perfection! No other Rose has been able to do that, including Lupone.
