tell that to Sondheim,Laurents and Clive Barnes. They all agree Lansbury is the one to beat as Rose to tihs day

Is there a source to this? I read this topic and expected definitive brilliance however I was very disappointed with Lansbury's Tony performance and the 1973 London cast recording. A quick sweep of Amazon reviews across a few Gypsy cast albums also indicates her performance is less 'definitive' than say her Mrs Lovett.

My personal favorites in this role, solely from the recordings (except Russel and Midler, I've seen the videos of both of them) are:

1. luPone
2. Peters
3. Lansbury
4. Midler
5. Russell

In YOUR opinion. Other people may see things differently. I happen to agree that the Lansbury recording is the best, but some people may not. And obviously don't.

And of the seven, Peters is at the bottem of my list.

Regardless, I think we can give Ethel Merman the award for "Loudest Mama Rose."

Has anyone here besides myself actually seen Patti in "Gyspy"? Let me know. Until then here is my review, having seen it 5 times now.

Is Lupone as good as everyone who "matters" in NYC says? Well.....yes....yes she is. She is actually acting the part this time instead of just playing herself. She is letting herself get inside the character which, when La Lupone does this, is magnificent!!!! Her "Everythings Coming Up Roses" is the best HANDS DOWN!! However, the rest of the songs she butchers to no end. Her "Roses Turn" is remarkable but dont go looking for some blown out, full of vibrato type of song. Patti truly has a nervous breakdown at the end of this show and there is NOTHING pretty about it.

Boyd Gaines is so God damn lovable it borders on insanity!! I have always loved this man. He is too good to be true. Here, he does something I have never seen a Herbie do before. He actually makes you believe he is in love with Rose. In doing so it makes him leaving all the more heartbreaking.

Now I know all NY can talk about is Lupone in Gypsy but if I were to be completely honest I would have to say this production belongs to Laura Benanti. She is absolutely STUNNING as Gypsy. I have never seen anything like it.

Go before Laura leaves!!

All that being said.....I still think Jenna Russell was robbed!

I saw it last May. I agree with you fully, except that I LOVED every aspect of Patti's performance.
