I promise you I am not.

No she doesn't. A belting bit powered Rose is welcome but certainly not the standard. Did you even bother to read what I wrote after that? There have been plenty of Rose's who were not strong singers (Tyne Daly, Linda Lavin, Roz Russell). Laurents himself has said he ALWAYS cast the ACTOR first when it comes to "Gypsy". He was not going to make the mistake he made with Merman twice. Gypsy is a musical/play. It is no longer even considered a just a musical by theater historians. It is one of very few to have such an honor.

I will agree with the fact that Midler over-acted in the second act...but I think her performance in Rose's Turn was brilliant!

She's too busy playing Bette Midler.

Rose is not all about singing.

Are you kidding? Rose needs to be hell of a strong singer....they would have to be an unbelievably spectacular actor in order to get by with okay singing. Of course the acting counts for more but a powerful voice is an absolute must, unless you're a Tyne Daly.

The woman who dubbed Roz Russell couldn't sing for sh!t.....they had her sing an octave down because her voice was so weak!!! Gahh!!! Rose is an alto as it is!!!

Lisa Kirk only PARTIALLY dubbed Roz..and Lisa was a hell of a singer!!!! she createdt he role of Lois in Kiss Me Kate and immortalized The Gentleman is a Dope in Allegro. She was one of the greats.!!

Maybe here, but if you go over to places like Broadwayworld she is much more loved..we tend to have a Lansbury cult following here (which doesn't really reflect, from what I've seen, the 'general opinion' at all)

Peters was my 2nd least favorite Rose next to Midler.

You'd never know from Gypsy....lol.

Of course the acting comes first.
And if you're a Tyne Daly, you can get away with passable singing if you're a truly brilliant actor.

But for the rest of us, powerful belting is an absolute must for Rose. And belting IS the standard. I don't care how much you don't like her, the score was written specifically for Merman's voice!!! Rose has to be a belter!!!

the rest of who? only an outstanding actress should be playing Rose.

as for Lisa Kirk..you do realize when a singer dubs a vpoice they adjust their voice to sound more like the person they are dubbing right?

and don';t tell me you never heard the OBC recording of Kiss Me Kate.

Does one need to be as good as Tyne Daly in order to be outstanding? And Tyne Daly's singing was still better than Roz/Lisa. Had she been less of an actress, her voice would have been detracting because she didn't have an outstanding voice.

And I've heard Lisa Kirk sing before. It really doesn't matter how good she is elsewhere, her singing in Gypsy was dreadful.

I normally don't mind changing keys to fit the voice. But it can't sound drastically different from what it's supposed to sound like. Lisa adjusted her voice to sound like Roz Russell but she sang the role like an octave down!!! It was ridiculous!!! They might as well have had Elaine Stritch play Rose....

Why didn't they just cast someone who could do it all, like Judy Garland?

Judy Garland would have sucked as Rose..plus at the time she lookedl ike a drug addicted homelss person.

Elaine Stritch now there would have been a brillaint Rose. too bad she never did the role.

They could've touched Judy up. Besides, I never imagined Rose as being a glamor queen....Roz Russell didn't exactly look at the peak of condition.

No but Garland was a mess! dhe couldnt sing , couldnt act, was in and out of rehab. even in prime condition she wasnt the right type fro Rose anyway.
