Yes, but Frank Sinatra was a huge star himself, and he was Nathan.

The film, due to its star-studded production, was something of an anomaly. Usually, as far as I've seen, you only get ONE as a big star on stage.

But he got that only after Brando was cast as Sky. In Frank Sinatra's mind, he was Sky. Or at least that is what I learned from the special features on the special edition DVD. :D

I personally think they are of equal importance, and are both leads. (even though many sources have Sky listed as the lead)

It doesn't matter.

Sky and Sarah are the romantic leads. Nathan and Adelaide are the comedic leads. And it depends on the production as well - the direction as well as the performances.

I have my opinion as to who is the leading male too, but in the end... it doesn't matter.

I always assumed Sky was the lead.

But as Baker said, it doesn't matter.

Nathan's really the lead I think. TONY evidence, more than anything, supports that.

And please, don't even bring up Sinatra. Horrid miscasting.

No I agree with the post some time back.

Sky, and Sarah are the romantic leeds. While Nathan, and Adelade, are Comic Relief characters. In Pantomime in the UK, the Comic relief characters are often the ones played by stars. But it is still the "Principal boy", and "Principal girl" (the romantic characters) which are listed as the leads.

Very true, but Panto and American musical theater are slightly different conventions. It's more complicated here, I'd venture to say.
