Post Audition Pieces, please help!!
This year I'm auditioning for Fiddler on the Roof, and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want Yente. I am a mezzo, but I sing alto/belt for musical theatre. Alto parts works for me when it comes to musical theatre because I'm a dramatic soprano meaning my voice is very colored and mature so it's not fitting with soprano musical theatre. My belt is powerful enough to get to about a C or an E, but it's not perfect that high. I'm basically look for an alto/belt song that can help me show how much I want Yente and that I would do that role complete justice. I've been searching and searching and I cannot find the right song!!! But I really want this role because I know I'm perfect for it and it's my dream role.
I am also open to the idea of Golde and Fruma Sarah.
PLEASE HELP [-o<

Yente's not that much a singing role. I mean, she has a solo line here and there, but the part's really memorable for the characterization and spoken dialog. So, I'd say -- look for a song that not necessarily is the best for your voice (though ... you know, something you can sing) but shows similar characterization.

As for specifics... I got nothin' ... but there's a way to start looking.

So, what you are saying is use a really big character song whether or not it works with the role?

Whether or not it fits with the role MUSICALLY. I would choose something that fits the CHARACTER.

Do you think "When you're good to mama" from Chicago could work?
It has the low enough notes to fit Yentes solo lines, it has the characteristic of the "overbearing mother/grandmother".
Is it possible to act it out in a way that would be similar to Yente? Or is the song naturally too sassy?

Not super familiar with the song, but from what I recall, I think it could work if you toned down/out the implied sexuality of it, but maintained the "sassy" -- Yente's a pretty sassy lady herself ("What Grandmother? My Grandfather came to me and said her grandmother is a big liar!")
