Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good song, and in a different show it probably could have worked. The two main problems I have with it is that is jars musically with the rest of the work (it's even way easier to play on the piano), but more importantly, I don't like what it does to Eva's character. I prefer her and Juan's relationship being more ambiguous. It also feels way more emotionally manipulative than anything else between Eva's collapse and the end of the film.

EXACTLY. that song ruins the whole show..Eva and Juan are manipulators, they have a marraige of power and mutual admiration..its not a love match in the common sense of it. Why that number wound up in the film and later revival I dont know..I cant believe Tim Rice would have written in for her let alone put it in the show decades later.

I think it could make sense if we assume she's not talking to Peron but to Argentinian in general, though that's probably not the original meaning since in the movie she's clearly speaking to Peron.

Also if you think of the double meaning of "must". The song can mean both "I hope you love me" and "I demand that you love me".

Yes. Or even "I suppose love me". ;)

I take the song as being Eva's shock that Peron is still there, now that she's sick.

"Why are you by my side?"
"How can I be any use to you now?"

She expected for Peron to to scram when she was no longer useful. The fact that he is still there shocks her, and the only explanation is that he actually loves her, hence "You must love me."

I agree it's a valid interpretation. But in contrast with the other interpretation, that makes the song really sappy and emotionally manipulative, making it easy to understand AzaleaRose’s reaction to it.
